The Principle

The indoor evaporator coil absorbs heat from your air, and because it is cold and permanently wet with condensate it grows biofilm and mold. That layer insulates the coil, restricts airflow, and sits directly in the path of the air you breathe — so it is an air quality issue as much as an efficiency one.

The outdoor condenser coil dumps that heat outside, and it clogs with pollen, grass, sand and storm debris. Near the coast it also corrodes from salt. When it cannot shed heat, refrigerant pressures and compressor temperatures rise, which is the mechanism behind a good share of compressor failures.

Signs The Coils Need Attention

Dirty coils rarely stop a system outright. They make it worse gradually, which is why the bill often notices before you do.

Indoor Coil Iced Up?
