The Trade-Off

A higher MERV filter has a denser medium, so it captures smaller particles — and makes the air work harder to get through. Put a high-rating one-inch filter into a system designed for a basic one and static pressure rises, airflow drops, the coil runs colder than it should and the blower works harder for less result.
The way out is surface area rather than density. A four or five inch media cabinet holds far more filter medium, so it can filter well while presenting less resistance than a thin filter of the same rating. That usually means opening up the return to fit the cabinet, which is why this is an assessment rather than a product.

Two Ways To Upgrade
Almost every filtration upgrade comes down to this choice. One is cheap and limited, the other costs more up front and works considerably better.
Fine within limits. The mistake is buying the highest rating on the shelf and assuming better is better.
More work up front, and the option that actually improves the air without punishing the equipment.
The Work
Fitting filtration properly is mostly about the return side of the system, which is the part nobody looks at.
Static pressure and airflow recorded before anything changes, so the effect of the upgrade is known rather than hoped for.
Whether the return path can take a deeper cabinet, and whether it has enough capacity in the first place.
Media cabinet installed at the air handler, sized to the system rather than to whatever is in stock.
Return plenum sealed so air is drawn through the filter rather than around it from the surrounding space.
Static pressure and airflow measured again. If the numbers moved the wrong way, the specification changes.
A filter left in too long becomes the restriction. You get the interval for the filter actually fitted.
That is worth a call. A filter rated higher than the system can handle will reduce airflow noticeably, and left alone it can freeze the coil. Putting the previous grade back is often the immediate fix.
