You may not know that “Smoke Tests” are required by the City of West Palm Beach on commercial A/C projects where the fans are capable of producing 2000 cfm or more.
During these test several things have to happen. Since this particular building has a central fire alarm tied into the fire dept – additional events had to occur. In attendance for the test were as follows;
- the Fire Marshall
- the chief mechanical inspector
- the general contractor
- the fire alarm contractor
- the fire alarm panel programmer
- the monitoring company and
- Advanced Cooling and Heating Inc., air conditioning licensed contractor.
The following things had to happen during the smoke test.
First we used small smoke bombs to simulate a fire starting.
Then the system sensor smoke detectors had to pick up the smoke ( 30 second smoke bombs) sound the fire alarm in the building flash the strobe lights in the building and shut down the air handler fans and in addition the main fire alarm panel on the first floor had to indicate what space in the building the alarm was in and which air handling device picked up the smoke.
Then we had to clear the smoke, re-set the alarms, and test all the machines.
