A mini-split pairs a compact indoor air handler with an outdoor condenser, joined by a refrigerant line set only a few inches across — so a room can be properly cooled without adding a single duct.

That makes ductless the practical answer for the spaces central air was never run to, or never sized for: a garage that has become a gym, a slab addition off the back of the house, a Florida room that bakes from ten in the morning, an upstairs bedroom the existing system cannot keep up with. Installation is quick and largely non-destructive — a three-inch penetration through the wall rather than a rebuilt ceiling.

The other half of the story is humidity. Inverter-driven compressors ramp up and down instead of switching hard on and off, so the system spends more time running slowly — and a coil that runs long and slow pulls far more moisture out of the air than one that blasts and stops. In a climate where the discomfort is as much damp as heat, that behaviour matters more than the SEER number on the box.

Ductless is not a replacement for a working central system. It is the answer for the one room that central air cannot reach, cannot keep up with, or was never designed to serve — and for buildings where running new duct is either impossible or costs more than the cooling is worth.

How We Install

What A Correct Ductless Installation Covers

A mini-split is a sealed refrigerant system assembled on site, and almost every early failure traces back to how it was put in rather than what was bought. Single-zone systems run one indoor head from one condenser; multi-zone systems run several heads from a shared outdoor unit, each with its own setpoint. Both are installed to the same standard.

Cooling Load Calculation

Sizing for the actual room — glass area, orientation, ceiling height, insulation and heat from equipment. Oversizing is the most common ductless mistake and the one that causes clammy rooms.

Indoor Head Placement

Mounting height and throw chosen so air reaches the far side of the room, with condensate fall and line access worked out before anything is cut.

Line Set Routing & Sealing

Refrigerant lines run with proper bend radius and insulation, and the wall penetration sealed against water and insects — a detail that matters a great deal in this climate.

Vacuum & Pressure Test

The system is evacuated to pull out air and moisture, then held under pressure to prove the joints before refrigerant goes in. Skipping this is why some mini-splits fail in year two.

Charge By Weight

Refrigerant charged to the manufacturer’s figure for the installed line length, then verified in operation rather than guessed from a gauge reading.

Electrical & Disconnect

Dedicated circuit confirmed at the panel and a code-compliant disconnect installed at the condenser. Garage and addition circuits frequently need upgrading before a system can go in.

Condenser Mounting

Pad or bracket set for storm conditions and secured to withstand Florida wind load, positioned clear of salt spray and standing water where the site allows.

Condensate Drainage

Gravity drain or a condensate pump configured and tested. Indoor heads are mounted on finished walls, so a drain that backs up shows up as a stain before it shows up as a fault.

Start-Up & Commissioning

Controls paired, operating pressures and temperature split confirmed, and the system handed over running to specification rather than simply switched on.

When It Stops Working

Ductless Repair, Service And Maintenance

Mini-splits are compact but they are still refrigerant systems with electronics, and they fail in their own particular ways. We repair and maintain ductless systems across Palm Beach County — including systems we did not install.

  • The indoor head runs but the air coming out is not cold
  • The outdoor condenser will not start, or starts and stops
  • Water dripping from the indoor unit or staining the wall below it
  • An error code blinking on the head or the handset
  • One zone cools properly and another does not
  • The breaker trips when the system comes on
  • Short cycling — running for a few minutes at a time, repeatedly
  • Ice forming on the indoor coil or on the refrigerant line
  • A musty smell when the unit starts, from growth on a damp coil
  • Noticeably louder operation, rattling or fan noise

Routine Service Matters More Here

Ductless heads pull room air straight across a wet coil through washable filters, with no ducted filter upstream. In Florida humidity that coil grows biofilm quickly, and a coated coil loses capacity long before it throws a fault.

Regular service covers filter and coil cleaning, condensate flow, refrigerant pressures and electrical checks — and it is the difference between a system that lasts and one that limps.

The Honest Math

Repair The Mini-Split, Or Replace It?

Ductless equipment is cheaper to replace than a full central system, which shifts the break-even point earlier than most people expect. When we quote a repair on an older head we show you both numbers rather than only the one in front of us.

Usually Worth Repairing

  • The system is under roughly eight years old
  • The fault is a control board, sensor, fan motor or capacitor
  • A blocked condensate drain or a dirty coil
  • A single accessible leak at a flare joint that can be remade and tested
  • One head has failed on an otherwise healthy multi-zone system
  • Cooling performance is fine apart from the specific fault

A sound system with one identified fault is worth fixing, and usually finishes in a single visit.

Usually Worth Replacing

  • Ten to twelve years old with declining output
  • Compressor failure — often most of the price of a new system
  • A leak that has already been chased and refilled more than once
  • Repeated faults across different components
  • Repair cost approaching the replacement figure
  • Equipment on a refrigerant that is being phased out

A newer system will dehumidify better, run quieter and cost less to operate. Financing is available.

Cooling load calculated for the actual space, single-zone or multi-zone recommended, and a written quote covering equipment, electrical and permits.

3. Layout Agreed

Head position, line routing and condenser location walked through with you on site, so you know exactly what will be visible before anything is drilled.

4. Installation

Mounting, line set, electrical and drainage carried out to Florida code, followed by evacuation, pressure test and charge by weight.

5. Commissioning

We verify temperature split, airflow and humidity control, set up the controls with you, and cover the filter cleaning that keeps it performing.
