The Principle

It is the same refrigerant circuit as your air conditioner, with a valve that reverses the flow. In summer it moves heat out of the house; in winter it moves heat from the outside air into the house. That is why it is efficient here — on a mild Florida cold front there is plenty of heat outdoors to collect.

It also means the machine runs all year rather than for one season, so it accumulates wear at roughly double the rate of a cooling-only system. And it has one part an air conditioner does not: the reversing valve. When that fails you often get a system that cools fine and will not heat, or the reverse.

Which Mode Is Failing?

Because a heat pump does two jobs with one set of parts, which mode misbehaves narrows the fault considerably. Worth knowing before you call.

Cooling Fine, Heating Not

  • Blows cool or neutral air in heating mode
  • Switches to heat but nothing changes
  • Runs continuously on a cold morning
  • Auxiliary heat runs constantly

Points at the reversing valve, the defrost board or the thermostat wiring — the heating-specific parts.

Neither Mode Working

  • Outdoor unit will not start at all
  • Breaker trips on startup
  • Ice on the coil or the lines
  • Loud grinding or buzzing outside
  • Short cycling on and off
