Heat pump diagnostics and repair across Palm Beach County. A heat pump is your air conditioner running backwards in winter, so a fault can show up in cooling, in heating, or only in the switch between them.

The Principle
Advanced Cooling and Heating is a licensed Florida HVAC contractor (License #CAC057209), established in 1996 and based in West Palm Beach. Almost nothing here has a furnace. Heat pumps are how Palm Beach County heats, and understanding what one actually is explains most of what goes wrong with it.
It is the same refrigerant circuit as your air conditioner, with a valve that reverses the flow. In summer it moves heat out of the house; in winter it moves heat from the outside air into the house. That is why it is efficient here — on a mild Florida cold front there is plenty of heat outdoors to collect.
It also means the machine runs all year rather than for one season, so it accumulates wear at roughly double the rate of a cooling-only system. And it has one part an air conditioner does not: the reversing valve. When that fails you often get a system that cools fine and will not heat, or the reverse.
Reading The Symptom
Because a heat pump does two jobs with one set of parts, which mode misbehaves narrows the fault considerably. Worth knowing before you call.
Points at the reversing valve, the defrost board or the thermostat wiring — the heating-specific parts.
Points at the shared refrigerant circuit or electrical side: charge, compressor, capacitor or contactor.
Diagnostics
A heat pump has more ways to fail than a cooling-only system, so the diagnostic covers the shared circuit and the parts unique to reversing operation.
Pressures, superheat and subcooling, plus leak detection where the readings point that way.
Tested for actual changeover rather than assumed. A valve that sticks part-way gives poor performance in both modes.
The board and sensors that manage defrost cycles. A fault here presents as weak heating on cool mornings.
Performance and electrical testing, including whether it is starting cleanly or struggling under load.
Capacitors and contactors tested under load, plus electrical load and voltage checks across the unit.
Blower, static pressure and thermostat communication — including whether the thermostat is calling for the mode you think it is.
If the reversing valve fails or auxiliary heat does not activate, the system may continue operating in cooling mode or produce insufficient heat. Diagnostic testing verifies proper mode switching and electrical performance.
A heat pump not cooling repair may involve refrigerant leaks, compressor failure, capacitor issues, airflow restrictions, or control board malfunction. Heat pump repair Florida diagnostics verify refrigerant pressures, superheat and subcool values, and electrical operation before restoring cooling performance.
Yes. Advanced Cooling and Heating, headquartered in West Palm Beach and serving all of Southeast Florida and surrounding areas, provides emergency heat pump repair services to quickly restore cooling during extreme heat and reliable heating during unexpected cold fronts.
Most heat pump repairs are completed within a single service visit depending on part availability and severity of the failure. Accurate diagnostics allow targeted component replacement rather than unnecessary system removal.
If the system is under 12–15 years old and the failure is isolated to components such as a capacitor, contactor, or refrigerant leak, repair is often appropriate. Repeated compressor failure or severe coil damage may indicate replacement is more cost-effective.
From emergency AC repairs and refrigerant leak detection to full HVAC system replacement, ductwork installation, heat pump service, and indoor air quality solutions, our HVAC technicians are ready to respond.
If you are experiencing no cooling, system failure, electrical issues, or AC leaks, call now for priority dispatch at 561-697-4247.
Turn the system off rather than leaving it running, and call. A heat pump struggling in cooling mode is usually low on charge or short of airflow, and running it that way is what turns a repair into a compressor.

Book diagnostics and a licensed Advanced Cooling and Heating technician will check heating and cooling, find the cause rather than the symptom, and tell you whether the repair is worth making on a system of that age.
